The City of Quesnel, B.C., has approved its first gay pride parade!

The City of Quesnel, B.C., has approved its first gay pride parade.
The city, in B.C.'s Cariboo region, has a population of about 10,000 people. The parade will take place on June 6 at 2 p.m. PT through the downtown core and will end at a local park for a barbecue and live music.
Angie Heenan, a local teacher who spearheaded the campaign for the parade, said she was prompted to do so when a former student came out to her.
The young woman explained to her the challenges she faced being gay in a smaller town and of not knowing how her friends and family would take the news.
"I just want our kids and young adults to feel empowered to be themselves," said Heenan.
There will be RCMP and extra security on site, but Heenan doesn't think it will be necessary.
"Quesnel is a really supportive community, and I've seen a lot of growth," said Heenan. "It's time."
